Brain Gym Workshop Review
The March 1999 workshop was on Brain Gym, which is an action oriented educational
program for whole brain learning for everyone. Ms. Bonnie Hershey, M.Ed., gave a humorous
and dynamic presentation on the benefits that this program provides children and adults.
"Switching on" the brain to maximize its performance, attention, and alertness
was discussed. The Brain Gym movements help prepare kids with the physical skills they
need in order to learn to read, write, and function effectively in and out of the
classroom. Drinking adequate amounts of water was also a key component to this program.
Most of us walk around with various degrees of dehydration. Ms. Hershey touched on how
this program worked at the cellular, physical and neurological level to maximize the
brain's learning.
With regard to learning difficulties, studies have shown that 94-97% of children
labeled with dyslexia, ADD, and learning disabilities have experienced inner ear
infections and/or allergies. These affect proper function of the vestibular/cellbellar
system. Brain Gym activities specifically stimulate and develop the vestibular/cerebral
system.
