SSEPAC NEWSLETTER
June 2001
The Sharon Special Education Parent Advisory Council would like to thank all
those who supported our programs during the past year. Workshops were held on
the new IEP, the new special education regulations, Assistive Technologies, and
Attention Deficit Disorder. We also had a wonderful evening filled with
heart-warming stories about those who received Appreciation Awards. SSEPAC
purchased 3 Alphasmart keyboards for each elementary school in town, and also
several new books to update the resource library at the high school. This
past year, we developed an easy-to-read flowchart, called the First Steps, to
guide parents through the initial steps they should take to help determine if a
child might need special education services. The First Steps is ideal if
you are worried about your child and don't know where to start, and is available
on our web site, www.sepac.org/sharon,
or by calling 781-784-1554, ext. 8090.
On May 1, SSEPAC elected officers for the coming year. They are: President:
Susan Linehan; Vice-Presidents: Mark Baron, Alan Bloom, Pamela Weir, Sheri
Rader, Bonnie Klayman, and Pauline Stratis; Secretaries: Lee Berkowitz, Susan
Zandrow, and Marsha Elgart; Treasurers: Stacey Simons and Debra May. This
is the largest group of officers SSEPAC has ever had and there is much
enthusiasm to offer even more programs for next year.
SSEPAC has set up committees for next year and is always looking for parents who
would like to help out, either on a one-time basis, or to help serve on a
committee. The committees for next year are: Workshops, Community
Education and Disability Awareness, Resource Library, Hospitality, Fundraising,
Public Relations-(Schools, Media, and town-wide), Membership, Web Site
Management, and Open Houses. Please call SSEPAC at our new phone mail
center at 781-784-1554, ext. 8090, if you'd like to volunteer to help on a
committee for next year. Please feel free to state a committee preference,
or if you would like to just help where needed. Over the summer, SSEPAC
will try to contact those volunteers.
Next year, SSEPAC is tentatively planning to hold workshops on Parental Stress,
Meeting the New School Superintendent and Special Education Director, Classroom
Modifications, and Adolescence.
