SSEPAC News November 2000

The Sharon Special Education Parent Advisory Council would like to thank all those who helped make the IEP2000 workshop a success. SSEPAC will be holding another workshop on the changes in special education reform on January 23. The updated regulations will be covered then.

Thanks to everyone who participated in SSEPAC’s Fall Flower Bulb fundraiser. SSEPAC raised approximately $2000. The money will be used for resources such as books, videos, scholarships, and public awareness. It will also help secure good speakers for our workshops.

On November 28, at 7:00 PM, SSEPAC will be holding a workshop on ADD/ADHD. This workshop will focus on the integration of behavior modification and medications. All SSEPAC workshops are held at the Sharon Middle School. The next general meeting for SSEPAC will be held on Tuesday November 7, at the Sharon Middle School, from 7-9 PM.

Many of those in Sharon were saddened by the recent passing of Sally Walisever, a long time teacher in the Sharon Public Schools. Sally was known for her desire to give all children an equal opportunity to learn, whatever their disabilities may have been. In Sally’s honor, SSEPAC has purchased the book titled, "Introduction to Special Education: Teaching in an Age of Opportunity", by Deborah Deutsch Smith. The inside cover includes an inscription recognizing Sally’s dedication to teaching. The book is available at SSEPAC’s Resource Library located within the Sharon High School Library.

SSEPAC has also purchased 4 copies of "The Brand New Kid", by the popular television personality, Katie Couric. They were recently distributed to the elementary schools in town. The book was written in verse as a parable to tolerance following last year’s outbreak of school violence. It teaches children about being kind, compassionate, and inclusive. Ms. Couric found there to be an urgent need to reach children who were outcasts and at risk of being violent. She’s had a long passion for writing in verse.
