Summer 2000 Newsletter

New Officers

The Sharon Special Education Parent Advisory Council held elections for officers on May 2. The new officers for the upcoming year are: Co-Presidents: Susan Linehan and Mark Baron; Vice Presidents: Alan Bloom and Pauline Stratis; Treasurer: Stacey Simons; Secretaries: Lee Berkowitz and Pamela Weir. Past President, Suzanne Peyton, will continue as immediate Past President of SSEPAC as a consultant. She is currently the Executive Director of the Mass. Association of Special Education Parent Advisory Councils.

Seeking Volunteers

SSEPAC is looking for help from any parents who might want to volunteer in even the smallest way. Responsibilities can vary from either pitching in on a one-time basis at a workshop or fund-raiser, or becoming a liaison to one of the schools or other organizations that SSEPAC communicates with.

New Programs

SSEPAC is developing, in collaboration with the High School Community Service Program, a student mentoring program, to be called "The Buddy Program". This program will match high school students and children with special needs to take part in various activities together to help foster social skills.

SSEPAC is also starting a Parent to Parent program. The program matches parents whose children have a similar special need. In this way, families with newly identified special needs children can get advice and support from others with similar issues. Please call 784-8316 if you would like to participate in this program or volunteer in another.

Parent Assessment Form

SSEPAC’s parent assessment form is included in this newsletter. By filling out this form, you will help SSEPAC develop programs for the next couple years. The assessment form can also be filled out on-line. Please check out SSEPAC’s web site at: www.ssepac.org . You may register your name at the web site to receive email on SSEPAC news and updates. Assessment forms can also be mailed to: SSEPAC, 1 School Street, Sharon, MA 02067

Membership and Future Newsletters On-Line

Due to confidentiality concerns, SSEPAC does not have access to the names of all the families in Sharon with children receiving Special Education services. Only those who have attended workshops and become members are currently in SSEPAC’s database. These mailings are put together by SSEPAC, but are mailed out by Pupil Personnel Services. SSEPAC is seeking to reduce labor and postage costs and is considering sending our newsletter via email to those who have access to the Internet. If you wish to receive the newsletter by email, but still wish to remain anonymous, please forward your email address to SSEPAC at: info@ssepac.org. When we email the newsletter, it will be sent as a blind copy, and no individual’s email address will be visible. If you wish to join SSEPAC, please call 784-8316, or use the email address above, and someone will be in touch with you soon.

IEP Workshop This Fall

Because of Special Education Reform in Massachusetts, there will be changes made in the look and content of IEP forms and the IEP process. This fall, on October 3, SSEPAC will host the workshop, "IEP 2000", which will be on the Individualized Education Plan. The Federation for Children with Special Needs will conduct the workshop. Other workshops being planned will include such subjects as Inclusion, ADD, and Assistive Technologies.

Book Donations

If any parents are trying to think of a gift idea for their children’s teachers, SSEPAC suggests making a book donation in honor of that teacher that covers a subject within a special needs/learning disability area. SSEPAC will affix an attractive sticker to the inside cover with that teacher’s name printed inside and make it part of SSEPAC’s Resource Library, which is located inside the High School library.

Conference Reimbursement Program

SSEPAC currently has in place a program which reimburses any Sharon resident with a school age child with special needs who attends a conference covering special needs issues. If you’re interested in finding out more about this program, call SSEPAC at 784-8316.
