WINTER NEWSLETTER

Joining the SSEPAC listserv enables you to be notified automatically about SSEPAC workshops and other events as well as items of interest to the special education community.  It also provides an online forum for members to exchange ideas and to ask questions of/respond to fellow members on any relevant topic, including those specific to your children.  Any member may post a message. Also, the e-mail addresses of the recipients are not displayed to anyone and are not published or provided to any other group.  (The only time your e-mail address will be shown is if you post a message). To subscribe go to: ssepac-subscribe@yahoo.com

Next time you happen to be in Mandarin Taste, please say a special thank-you to Alice. Alice donated all the food and the entire amount of the food sales to SSEPAC at the Harlem Rockets game in December. In addition, she physically purchased all the food and drinks, delivered them to the high school, and stayed and served the food as well. She’s has been extremely modest about her generosity and has only said she "wanted to help children with special needs".

Chase your winter blues away. Dutch Mill Flower Bulbs go on sale March 1st, 2002. Flyers will be sent home with all Sharon students by the end of February. Orders must be placed by Friday, March 22nd, 2002. All orders will be delivered by the 3rd week of April, before school vacation. Proceeds will be used for various special education areas such as: books, videos, technology, scholarships, workshops, disability awareness programs, etc.

On March 12, SSEPAC will be hosting a workshop on Parental Stress. The workshop is called, "Take Charge! And Succeed", presented by Bridges Associates. It will be held from 7-9 PM, at the Sharon Middle School Library. The snow date is March 14. Admission is free, although, in order to have enough handouts, please call 781-784-1554, Ext. 8090, and leave your name and those attending with you on the SSEPAC phone mail. PDP’s will be available for teachers who are planning to attend.

On May 7, SSEPAC will be hosting the Annual Recognition and Appreciation Awards. These awards are specifically intended to recognize any individual who has done something unique that made a positive impact on your child. They are meant for any individual, whether it is a teacher, coach, bus driver, police officer, or any other ordinary citizen. Nominations can come from any family in Sharon that has a child with special needs, whether or not they are on an IEP. The nominee can be from outside Sharon. Please see the nomination form within this newsletter. Nomination forms are also available at SSEPAC’s web site at: www.ssepac.org. If you plan to nominate an individual, please consider taking a photo of this person working with your child, and this will be part of a display that evening.

SSEPAC has a Resource Library located within the Sharon High School library, with hundreds of titles and videos covering many areas on special education and disabilities. It is constantly being updated and is open to Sharon residents during school hours. These items are available for borrowing.

The Federation for Children with Special Needs has a new handbook called "A Parent’s Guide to Special Education". It is available at the following web site: www.FCSN.org.

This May 7, the Sharon Special Education Parent Advisory Council will be hosting its annual Recognition and Appreciation Awards evening. These awards are specifically intended to recognize any individual who has done something unique that made a positive impact on your child. Nominations can come from any family in Sharon that has a child with special needs, whether or not they are on an IEP. The nominee can be from outside Sharon.

The deadline for nominations is April 2, 2002. It’s very important to note that this event is not meant to be a popularity contest, but rather an opportunity to recognize a specific positive act.
